Without trying to sound like an advertisement, I would like to mention the advantages of a design like that of the Sleep Number Bed. There has been a lot of talk about being disadvantaged by the design of any number of things including: clothing, furniture, toilet stalls … all due to the wide variety of shapes and sizes of the population. Designers, far too often, pick a small slice of the entire population to design for and are content with the design being suitable for only that small portion of the population. The Sleep Number Bed not only takes into consideration the varying sizes of people, but allows for people of different sizes to be comfortably accommodated using the same product at the same time- What a breakthrough! Designers need to think how their product responds to the public as whole, and when it cannot (like in the case of clothing) they need to portray in it away that is not misleading to those who were not in mind when the product was designed.
